Perhaps the first thing you will need to consider will be the size. While this may perhaps depend upon the number of family members you have, it will be constrained by the available space in the room. The first thing to do here is to walk around the room in order to gain a rough idea as to where the item may go and how much space there is available.

Next, take more precise measurements using a tape measure. Ensure you take into account both the amount of legroom required for maximum comfort and the amount of space left around the furniture that will provide an appropriately sized walkway.

With that done, you should next consider how the size of the piece will relate to the size of the room. Using a larger couch in a larger room tends not only to look a little awkward but will also have the effect of making the room feel smaller. In this sense, it is best to opt for the smallest size you can.

In addition, to ensure you are left with a sense of open free-space it is always a good idea to opt for items that have open style legs. For most smaller rooms, a compact two-seater will be the maximum size you should go for.

You will need to consider the purpose your new couch is likely to serve. For example, will it mainly be reserved for guests or will it be expected to double-up as a spare bed when friends come to stay for the weekend? If so, it will be wise to go for one that converts into a bed with ease and preferably a model that includes a little storage space.

Finally, you will need to take into account the kind of treatment your new couch may be subjected to. If you have very young children, a leather finish may be a bad idea. Tears can occur easily and they are not so easy to repair. The better option here may be to go for a tough, durable model that is finished with an easy to maintain fabric.

Whether you choose an open coil, continuous coil, pocket sprung or foam mattress, it must provide sufficient support for your joints and spine. The amount of padding, be it manmade polymers or natural fibres such as horsehair or wool, is largely a matter of personal preference.

Open coil and continuous coil mattresses tend to be among the cheaper types of mattress. The principal difference between them is that open coil mattresses consist of single springs, whereas continuous coil mattresses consist of springs made from a single looped wire.

If you’re looking for a double mattress, the springs in a continuous coil mattress move as a single unit and wear out more quickly than other types of mattress. As a result, couples sharing a bed are more likely to disturb each other during the night and end up rolling together.

Pocket sprung mattresses, on the other hand, consist of single springs, each enclosed in its own pocket of fabric. Each spring supports weight individually, so pocket sprung mattresses are a better choice for couples sharing a bed.

Some mattress suppliers will sell a double mattress with different levels of firmness on either side to accommodate couples of different sizes. Mattress specifications often include the number, or density, of springs in the mattress. A mattress typically consists of between 450 and 1,100 springs, but it’s the quality of construction of the springs that is important rather than the absolute number.

The most sophisticated and most expensive types of mattress tend to be foam or latex models. So-called memory foam mattresses, for example, react to your body temperature by moulding themselves to the shape of your body.

This reduces the stress on your spine and joints and reduces the flow of air around your body, making the mattress feel warmer. The uniform support provided by memory foam should be a significant contributor to a decent night’s sleep.

This is the junction where the owners of older homes (we’re talking centuries old here) often find themselves at a loss. The repairs to the structure itself, though tedious, were obvious. All that was necessary was to follow what was either already there and in need of upkeep, or to refer to other structures from the same period as a reference to follow what was in keeping for that style. The point being, there were guidelines for which to follow in restoring your old home so there was no real need to access your own creativity, or expertise in decorating as of yet.

The only decisions to be made that were not already defined by the original builders and architects were whether or not modern additions were to be introduced. That too you found could be deferred to experts in the field. They could direct you as to what made the most sense, and what would add to or detract from the structure. Also, they were there to advise you on what would or would not be smart to change regarding insulation, and long term costs.

But, eventually the time to decorate does arrive and the question becomes how to go about it. Do you have collections of art that are the feature of your dwelling, or is the house itself meant to be the focal point. We, like many other’s faced with this choice decided upon making the house the centre of attention.  This meant that great care was taken not to bring in articles or materials that would overshadow the gorgeous wooden and slate floors. In our case, it also meant that the wonderful stained glass window in the drawing room should not have any competition from wall art, much less anything that was not from the time period as that of the homes completion.

Granted it is a choice, to follow in what the original intent was for design, or to go your own way based upon personal preference. We recognise not everyone who comes into ownership of an old, or even historical building will feel the same way. There will be people who purchase the property more as an investment, than as an act of love. Others might inherit the abode, and simply see themselves as stewards. Meanwhile they do not care to live amongst antiques, or things from the past. To each his own, but recognise the moment will arise when the choice will have to be made.

For a contemporary look, go with cylindrical pendant lights in either varying sizes, or identical ones. You can base that choice upon the style of the rest of your kitchen, or on how large the space is that you will be covering. If you choose the various diameters, then stagger their placement, if you select identical ones, a perfectly straight line up works well to produce a crisp look.

It is recommended that you stick to light colours for those pendant light shades. These will allow more light to show through, and thus highlight the upper section of your kitchen along with the lower half. That means it will feel more spacious, and illuminate more features within your design.

Of all of the places where inexpensive art can be powerful, it is a nursery. Just think back to the pages of your favourite children’s books, and already you are familiar with some amazing illustrations. In fact, choosing one of these special books as the source for inspiration for the entire nursery makes tons of sense. Pull the colors you are most drawn to from the images, and then either have copies of those pictures professionally copied onto lovely quality paper, or remove the illustrations directly from the book. Frame these, and a whole world of imagination will unfurl. Just writing about it makes me want to work on the project.

So what are these enchanting materials that will bring a kitchen out of the past and into the present, if not the future? My secret wonder tools are faux steel film, metallic finish, and adhesive metal tiles. Now I must insist you not use them all in one kitchen, but beyond that let the creative juices flow forth and render you the inhabitant of a fabulous spruced up kitchen.

Each of these materials are applied in different ways, so perhaps this is one way to choose from them, or take a look at some photos of each of them in their completed form. None of them are particularly difficult to insert, or apply, and with this minimal effort your old look of your kitchen can become a distant memory.

Black bar stools are still the largest selling range on the market and with good reason; black works perfectly with any style of decor and can fit into any environment, as well as complementing any other colour. Used sparingly with white, black gives a minimalist look, or it can be used with light tones for startling contrast and visual impact, such as black and cream or black and red stools. It can even be matched with darker shades for an elegant, uniform look. It is also the easiest colour to keep clean, and fares well against stains.

Black bar stools come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with designs that match any taste and requirement. For a contemporary edge, resin stools give a modernist appearance and are also very durable and easy to clean. ABS resin is a high impact polymer and is usually found in a high gloss finish, reflecting light of the ergonomically styled seats. ABS is light and impact resistant, with stools either moulded entirely from ABS or used in conjunction with other materials, resulting in egg-chair styles with padded sections and a hard outer shell.

Acrylic Perspex, the other type of resin stool, is very similar to ABS in appearance, but creates much more slender seat designs – whereas ABS stools are often large and three dimensional, acrylic stools utilise a single curving piece of Perspex for a slim appearance.

There are also black wooden stools on the market; crafted from solid wood and lacquered in multiple layers for a rich satin black finish. There are varying styles, from those that give a completely smooth surface, to stunning bentwood designs shaped using traditional techniques and lacquered to showcase the grain for natural beauty and further visual impact.

The styles that prove most desirable however are upholstered stools, which are padded with high density foam to give superb levels of comfort and support. Black faux leather upholstery is the most popular form, giving the grained look and feel of supple leather at a fraction of the cost. It is also very resilient to cleaning solutions and chemicals, making it ideal for busy areas such as breakfast bars and kitchen bars where spillages of all types can easily occur.

Real leather gives an upmarket feel and opulent touch, providing exemplary levels of luxury and an organic feel that enhances is surrounding location. Leather is very tough and resistant to stains, as well as giving a soft, pliant touch. The stunning natural grain and aroma are distinctive to leather and make it all the more desirable, setting it apart from other materials as a range topper.

Nonetheless, now that all of our pictures are safely, if not properly assembled on the walls there is one more thing to do. It is a small task that we here all have learned the importance of completing. In the high traffic zones of a house it is altogether prudent to affix wall decorations more securely than elsewhere.

What exactly happens to send these items off kilter I am not privy to, but I have seen it and hate it. Avoid this by affixing self-adhesive Velcro strips to the back of frames. I think placing them on the corners works sufficiently, and then press firmly against the wall to secure. To the best of my knowledge everyone I have ever shared this with has gone ahead and done it too, making it one of my best tips.

I started off with a menu that was premade by a fellow carol maker, and conformed it to the tastes of my choir members. We will have a menagerie of tasty treats

• Smoked salmon platter and fennel salad
• Crudites with buttermilk and crab dip
• Mini pot pies
• Mulled wine

Upon our return:

• Fresh baked ginger snaps
• Classic Eggnog

Now that I have that sorted, I am really getting excited. Plenty to look forward this holiday season!

That is why you should select the best program you can find to implement when eliminating the clutter in your home. For me, the method is as folliows. I pull out a notebook, grab a pen and walk through each room assessing what each is used for, or better yet, what it is supposed to be used for. Often there is a struggle between the intended purpose of a room, and what it ultimately is used for.

Identify whether you need to accept that the space is being used for activities you had not anticipated. If so, face this fact, but eliminate all the things left that do not fall into any of the acceptable purpose categories. Obviously, if the room is being used for things that should be conducted elsewhere, and there is an actual acknowledged space for that/those activities immediately relocate those items to the other area. Everything else goes bye bye.
