Different Types of Mattress

// September 4th, 2011 // Decorating

Due to modern technology there are loads of different options to choose from when selecting the most comfortable mattress. Depending on your needs and budget, there’s a mattress to suit everyone. Below are the main types of mattresses available to buy:

Memory Foam Mattresses – These are made from a material developed by NASA to help astronauts absorb severe G-Forces. The mattress has an outer layer that is temperature sensitive, so it moulds to your body shape. This means they’re great for people with back pain as it relieves pressure; however this does make them a bit pricey.

Sprung Mattresses – This is when individual mattress coils are sewn into each pocket of the mattress. This makes it better for your spine due to the different pressures which offer more support. This type of mattress is good if you move around a lot in your sleep, as anybody sleeping in the bed with you won’t feel it and they’re cheaper than memory foam mattresses. These are great if there’s a large difference in the weight and size of you and your partner.

Continuous Coil Mattresses – This is mattress is made from one continuous loop of wire, this makes the springs move together in unison, meaning that eventually there’ll be a dip in the middle of the bed. On the plus side, they are cheap to buy and can be perfect for guest rooms where they aren’t used very often.

Open Coil Mattresses – This type of mattress contain one or two coils for the whole area. Therefore any movement is felt on the other side of the bed. These mattresses quickly begin to get uncomfortable as the springs get strained. These are very cheap, however don’t last very long.

Foam or latex mattresses – These are good for people with allergies to dust mites, however they may lack the comfort that other types of mattresses possess.

So, when you’re selecting your mattress, make sure all options are considered as this could be the difference between a good night’s sleep and an uncomfortable few hours in bed.
